Mercury Regulation of EU

Since the beginning of January 2018, the Mercury Regulation of the European Union (EU) 2017/852 is effective. It includes a gradual ban of products containing mercury, as mercury is toxic to human health, animals, plants and ecosystems. As a fisrst step manufacturing processes using mercury or mercury compounds as catalysts, are forbidden since January 1, 2018. There will be more regulations and use bans to drastically restrict the worldwide use of mercury.
